Below is the reference architecture that Stratus Cloud Consulting used to deploy their highly available Corporate Website.
Customers in South Africa can now establish a dedicated network connection from their premises to AWS. As with any AWS Direct Connect site, these sites conform to the standard resiliency model that includes two customer facing devices per location that allow customers to establish locally resilient connectivity and redundant connectivity to the Amazon backbone network. Using AWS Direct Connect, you can establish private connectivity between AWS and your datacenter, office, or colocation environment, which in many cases can reduce your network costs, increase bandwidth throughput, and provide a more consistent network experience than Internet-based connections. Connections are always made to a particular Direct Connect location, and can run at either 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps, or work with a partner to connect at speeds less than 1Gbps.
Please see our AWS website for details on our locations and pricing. Instructions on how to set up AWS Direct Connect are available in our AWS Direct Connect Users Guide. Sign in to your AWS Management Console to order AWS Direct Connect today!

It is a matter of when rather than if Amazon Web Services opens one of its data centres in South Africa.
That is the message from Amazon’s chief technology officer, Werner Vogels, who said on Wednesday the group was working on understanding not only South African entrepreneurs but those across the continent.
“We have a lot of customers here already, especially when it comes to young business … but also larger companies, before opening up a region here,” Vogels told Business Times on the sidelines of the company’s summit in Cape Town.
